One of Southern Africa’s most iconic landscapes was experiencing drought conditions. This not only impacted communities in the region but forced animals closer to settlements in search of water, increasing the risk of human wildlife conflict. Key stakeholders were attempting to raise funds for drought resilience and wildlife protection programs. However, a lack of data was hindering their ability to communicate the scale of the problem, and raise the funds needed.
Amini analyzed data from a period of over 10 years to support a report created for potential funders. Our analysis confirmed the current season was the worst drought over the preceding five-year period. However, the data also showed the region should in fact be preparing for higher-than-average rainfall in the upcoming season. This indicated the resilience funds would need to account not only for droughts but potential for flash flooding following the intense dry period.
The data analysis from Amini combined with local context from stakeholders produced a more complete picture of the challenges and appropriate interventions required for both local communities and wildlife in this important landscape.
