Natural capital in several African countries is under threat from poor land management and the worsening effects of climate change. Coupled with the pressing needs of a rising population, intervention to halt and reverse this deterioration is critical. A large multi country project was kicking an attempt to restore valuable landscapes in the region. However, insights on the current conditions were critical to better planning and understanding the potential impact.
Amini evaluated the proposed target landscapes in the region, with a focus on the hazards posed by climate change. The analysis considered land use, land cover, climate trends, climatic vulnerabilities such as drought, soil health. Layered on top of this were socioeconomic aspects including farmer incomes as these could be affected by the introduction of new vegetative species. We provided baseline data on the current state of the ecosystem and highlighted priority areas for restoration.
Amini’s analysis has been used to acquire millions of dollars in funding from global climate financiers. The project will roll out with Amini providing data and technology support, building on the baselines and measuring impact of the interventions on both the environment and communities.
