Spotlight on Amini.ai: Environmental Data in Africa

We find out more about Amini and the work it’s doing on harnessing the power of data for key sectors in Africa from Kate Kallot, Founder & CEO.

What is the problem that your company is solving and why is it important to do so?

Amini addresses the critical lack of accurate, reliable, and localised environmental data in Africa. This data scarcity hampers decision-making in key sectors like agriculture, natural resource management, and climate resilience. Without reliable data, African countries and the Global South face difficulties in planning for sustainable development, managing natural resources effectively, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

What technology/innovation are you bringing to this field?

Amini brings cutting-edge technology to the field by leveraging satellite data, AI, and machine learning. Our platform processes large volumes of Earth observation data, offering high-resolution insights into land use, deforestation, soil health, agricultural productivity and more. Unlike traditional data collection methods, which can be time-consuming and expensive, Amini’s platform provides faster, more accurate, and scalable solutions tailored for the unique environmental challenges faced in Africa and the Global South. Amini enables stakeholders, from governments to private companies, to make more informed decisions based on real-time, locally relevant data.

What is the potential of your product/service to cut emissions?

Amini’s platform enables more efficient farming practices, reducing land degradation, deforestation, and overuse of water and fertiliser. By optimising resource usage, Amini directly contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved environmental sustainability in agriculture. Amini’s technology has significant potential to reduce emissions by enabling better land use planning and resource management. By providing accurate data on deforestation, land degradation, and agricultural productivity, we help organisations implement more sustainable practices. For instance, Amini can support farmers in adopting climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable practices which minimises emissions from land use changes and improves soil health. Additionally, governments can use our data to monitor and enforce policies that limit deforestation and promote conservation, both of which are crucial to reducing carbon emissions on the continent.

What are the key challenges that you face?

A key challenge is the high cost of accessing good quality data; however, we have struck partnerships with several actors across the continent to support the work we do.

What do you need to overcome them?

Amini is an ecosystem company, we are building partnerships to leverage local knowledge and technical expertise to ensure the data and insights we provide are always rooted in local context. We are always looking for more partners across various fields including research and technology to work together to make data more accessible and useful across the continent.  Engaging directly with local stakeholders to build trust and demonstrate the value of our solutions is also crucial.
